You know, I'm rather enjoying this letter writing exercise of Dumbledore's. It's quite interesting. I could be writing to someone I pass in the halls every day and not notice!

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and is getting back into the swing of school as well as can be expected. I spent the holiday with my family, it went well. My parents are always happy to see me, which is nice.

My sister and her boyfriend are getting pretty serious, I think, which is pretty awful. He's a puffy whelp of a man, and he just couldn't possibly be more unpleasant. What if I have to spend every holiday in the company of him? I don't think my parents like him either, but they are being so nice about it.

I knew it was coming, so I bought Severus's birthday present while I was home. It was harder this year than it has been. I bought him a muggle book, he's less likely to own it and it might give some interesting perspective on some common ingredients. I think. Ugh, I shouldn't stress about this.

Potter's mother?

I think it's rather silly myself.

Perhaps. Sometimes with Dumbledore you have to trust that somehow, he knows what he's doing.

I'm enjoying it myself. My penfriend seems very nice.

Petunia is fairly unpleasant herself. Are you sure they don't deserve each other?

Speaking of boyfriends ... I'm not really sure how to put this, so I'll just come right out and say: you wouldn't happen to know of any girls who are sweet on me, would you? I know this isn't something you'd expect to hear from me I only ask because I got a letter from a secret admirer today as strange as that sounds, and I'm trying to work out who she is.

I'm glad. I can't wait to find out who they are!

I guess I was sort of holding out that she'd find someone who would bring out the best in her, whatever that may be. You are probably right, though.

Hee! Really? We must find out. I have no idea, but no girl would tell me anyway. We all know the cardinal rule of girldom is you tell your friend immediately when you get the information, and if she wants it to still be a secret, she wouldn't go to your friends. Did she leave any clues or anything? Or handwriting, she must be in some of your classes.

The new students as a whole look at you strangely, but no one develops such a debilitating crush so very quickly that I've seen.

Neither can I.

The best in her might actually be worse than she is now.  I understand. It's hard to give up hope.

Cardinal rule of girldom? I don't suppose you can furnish me with a list of the remainder of the rules? That sounds as if it would come in handy, especially if I have a girlfriend soon. I hadn't expected that she would have told you. I mostly wondered if you'd seen anybody looking at me more often than was normal -- other than the new students. (Why do they stare at me like that? It's a bit unnerving.)

There's not much there in the way of clues, but I'll tell you what little I have worked out so far: She's a Slytherin, as well, because she's left notes for me in the common room, though I think the house-elves must have picked them up because I never found them. She is also exceedingly shy because she has tried several times to talk to me and can't manage it. She has also apparently fancied me for a long time, which would let out any of the new students.

She outright says that she isn't very popular or respected, and she thinks we are a lot alike (she and I are a lot alike, I mean). I don't recognise the handwriting at all, unfortunately, though she could be using some sort of concealment charm. I don't suppose I could borrow your Revealer after Charms? That might help.

Man, I actually have to come up with a list now? Or could I just say, if I tell you, I might have to oblivate you.

If it's at the Slytherin table, I wouldn't necessarily notice - but you should definitely look around. Unless she's being more clandestine about it now that she's sent the letter. I'll look around in our classes, but it's quite possible she's not in our year.

Shy, unpopular, disrespected... Sounds awful. I do hope you'll be kind to her, I'm sure it would help a lot. It must be awful to keep something like that all bottled up.

(No, really, why do they look at you so strangely? Some of them look completely petrified, some it's just odd...)

(ooc: you know i was thinking with the way some of the letters are going, we'd have plenty of material if we ever wanted to start up that suspicion plotline again)

Thanks ever so much! I really need to get my own Revealer, one of these days.

Point taken. I shall strive to keep my curiosity regarding girldom firmly in check.

No, I suppose you wouldn't, though I didn't want to dismiss the possibility out-of-hand, in case you had noticed somebody giving me the eye watching me. Though I'll keep an eye out for that sort of thing now.

I certainly understand how she feels. She's already worried that I hate her, so I'll be very careful in that regard. And it's horrible to keep it all in, but sometimes you just don't know how to talk about something like that -- at least without sounding weak.

(I suppose they could have heard Potter and Black talking about my "reputation" with the Dark Arts. That would be enough to make anyone wary, if they didn't know me.)

[OOC: That would be awesome, 'cause I really enjoyed that before (while it lasted).]

I've had another letter this morning, though there's not much else in the way of clues. She's relieved to know I don't hate her, which is good, and she's right that we have some things in common. Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts are amongst her favourite lessons, as well. Still no clue about her year, though she mentioned not being keen on flying lessons in first year. That would seem to disqualify Emmeline Vance and Augusta Triggs. At least I can't imagine not liking flying and trying out for the Slytherin Quidditch Team.

She's shy and likes to read, so there's another thing we have in common. Liking to read, I mean. I may not be the most outgoing bloke in the world, but I wouldn't call myself shy, exactly. And she says boys tell her she'd be much prettier if she'd do thus and so. What a horrid thing to say to somebody! I hope I've never said something like that to her, though it's a possibility  On the other hand, she says I'm the most handsome man she's ever seen. Clearly she needs spectacles, so look for somebody who squints at me a great deal. Either that, or she's a nutter.

One other thing (and this one is very odd): would you be inclined to call me 'mysterious'? I can't say I've ever thought of myself as such. But she says I'm 'clever and rather mysterious,' which is, in part, why she fancies me.

I... have no idea why anyone would think it was a good idea to tell a girl that. Boys at this school confuse me sometimes.

It's good you have things in common! You'll have a lot to talk about when she makes her identity known to you. I'm glad you told her you didn't hate her, that should help her. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, you know. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean she can't reasonably.

After so many years, it's hard to see you as mysterious it's hard to know what you are thinking with some of these choices, but. And as to the new students, if I hear any of them dispensing of those awful rumors I'll set them straight. I'm tired of it, you know?

If it's any consolation, some of them confuse me, too.

I certainly hope so (if I ever find out who she is)! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Is that just a platitude, or are you saying you don't think I'm hideous? Point taken -- again.

So, all those years I've spent working on cultivating my mystique have been wasted, then? Teasing, of course. And thanks. I'm sure it does get tedious, but I appreciate it more than you know.

I've received another letter this morning, with an exceedingly interesting development. You probably remember that in my previous letter, I asked if she and I had any lessons together. She replied that she wasn't sure if she should say. While that isn't an outright confession, it does seem highly suspicious (to me, at least). If we didn't have any lessons together, I imagine she would have just said no. That simple answer would have given me many more possibilities. What do you think? Am I reading too much into that, or does it really imply that she's a fifth year, as well?

She also says she was hopeless at flying as well as hating it, but there's something scratched out, following that sentence. I can't make it out entirely, but it looks like part of it could be 'traumatic.' As I recall, only one person in our first year flying lessons had more trouble than I did, and that would Sappho Duncannon. Of course, that presupposes she's a fifth year, doesn't it? Damned circular logic. Then again, she says McGonagall is mean to her, and McGonagall does seem to single Miss Duncannon out a great deal.

You'll find out who she is. Either you find out, or she tells you. She didn't write you a letter just for kicks... she's just working herself up to it.

Mystique? Ha. And there's no need to thank me, it's as much for my benefit as yours. I hate to hear people talk about my friends that way.

It could be an outright confession - she'd be more likely to not want you to know she's in your year than not want you to know she's in one of the other six. If you combine that with the likelihood that she'd be in our year anyway (we just know those in our year better), well, I'd work under that assumption unless you find anything to the contrary.

I guess you're right. It's just hard to be patient. Then again, it probably took all the courage she had to write to me, so if I keep reminding myself of that, hopefully it won't be so hard.

You don't think I'm capable of having a mystique? Actually, never mind -- don't answer that.

Exactly what I was thinking: she'll do anything she can to throw me off the scent -- short of outright lying, that is, because she obviously doesn't want to make me angry. Though I wonder if it would be better to bluff her into thinking I am absolutely certain of who she is in order to get her to confess, or if reassuring her that I won't bite her head off would be quicker.

Exactly - I would just keep trying to reassure her that you will accept whoever she is. Not that I don't think you haven't, but just keep going along that line and she'll become comfortable.

Yeah... Do you have any ideas of who it might be? If you really think she's in your year, you probably have some idea. There's only so many, right?

I was just thinking the same thing, actually. Well, either that, or seeing if I could bluff well enough to get her to own up

I thought I might know, but now I'm not so sure. I know which Slytherin fifth years she can't be, so that only narrows it down three -- unless, of course, she supplies me with evidence that precludes her being a fifth year.

Yeah, until she provides some kind of evidence (I have no idea what that would be), she's a fifth year and you've got her virtually figured out. Any other clues?

I think I've worked it out, but if you don't mind, I'd rather not say until I have her next letter for confirmation. I wouldn't want you to stare at her or anything. That might make her nervous -- or worse yet, taint my observations. You don't mind, do you?
